Most of the meanings and symbols behind the koi originate from this ancient myth.
According to legend from China and Japan, there’s once a giant team made by thousands of koi swimming on the Yellow River in China. As they swim they gain strength by boosting the flow. However, on the Yellow River, there’s a waterfall. Once the fish reaches the waterfall, most of them come back because it’s too hard to pass. The koi that continues to try to reach the top of the waterfall had to taken 100 years. Finally, there was one of them jump successfully to the top of the waterfall. To praise perseverance, the gods turned it into a beautiful golden dragon.
The gate at the waterfall is called “Dragon gate”. And the legend holds that, until now, any koi with strength and persistence to complete the passage to Dragon gate will become a dragon in heaven.
It’s also said that if a koi got caught, it will wait for the knife without shivering but with the courage of a Samurai warrior facing the sword in battle. This clearly describes the cultural belief in the power, persistence and courage of the carp.
